In the 1851 census, John Braund (b.1800, Shebbear, Devon) was a Wholesale Draper, living at 3 Mount Vernon, St. Leonard, Exeter in Devon. His wife, Mary Ann (b.1821, Somerset) and children; Elisabeth M. (b.1835, Devon), John W. (b.1848, Devon) and Charles J. (b.1849, Devon), lived with him. They had one general servant listed.

In 1861 the family lived at Upper Belmont Terrace, Portswood. John Braund (b.1800 Shebbear, Devon) was an accountant. His wife, Mary Ann (b.1813, North Caney, Somerset) was a school mistress. They had a 4 year old daughter, Mary Ann (b.1857, Winkleigh, Devon).

His other children did not live with them. Elizabeth M. may have been recorded as Emily M. Braund , a haberdashers assistant and had remained living in Exeter. Charles James was a silk mercers apprentice, living in Southampton.
