In the 1851 census, Richard C. Callender was 16 and living with his widowed father, Richard B. Callender (b.1800, Edgehill, Lancashire) at 1, Granby Place, Clifton, Bristol. Richard senior was a solicitor. There were two other children, Margaret W (19) and Henry s (14). They had visitors and 2 domestic servants.

In 1861, Richard C. Callender was living with his brother George W (b.1831, Clifton) in his house at 47 Queen Ann Street, Cavendish Square, Marylebone, Middlesex (now London). Richard was described as a landed proprietor, as was his sister Margaret who was also present.
George was married to Sophia and had a 1 year old daughter, Sophia M. George was a surgeon. They had 5 domestic servants, including a housekeeper, 2 nurses, a cook and a footman.

In the 1871 census, Richard C Callender (b. 1835, Clifton, Gloucestershire), was described as the 'incumbent of Christchurch, Portswood'. He was lodging in St Denys Road, South Stoneham with Laura M. Allee and her mother, Mary Callaway. Their income was from houses and dividends.

In 1881, Richard and Anna J. (b.1831, Odiham, Hants) were lodging with the Merchant family at 10, Tottenham Place, Clifton (District of Barton Regis). Richard was acting curate of Clifton parish church.
Head of household was William R.F. Merchant, a non-practising physician and surgeon.
