In 1861 a Richard Goulding (b.1809, Nursling, Romsey) and his wife Jane (b.1813, Nursling) lived in Highfield. Richard was a buck farmer and Jane a laundress. The census showed 6 children. 5 daughters, Jane (b.1845), Matilda (b.1847), Maria (b.1849), Emily (b.1852) and Rosina (b.1860) and a son, William (b.1858).

In 1871, the same couple are still living in Highfield. Richard was a labourer, Jane still a laundress. The only child still with them was Rosena.

(In 1851, the family were found to be living in Millbrook Southampton. Richard was a labourer. They had an additional daughter, Fanny (b.1844).
