In the 1841 census, Elizabeth Lisle (b.1801, Hampshire) was living in St Mary's, Southampton with her husband, John (b.1801, Hampshire) and 7 children, John (b.1826), Mary (b.1821), William (b.1826), Elizabeth(b.1829), Ernest (b.1831), Richard (b.1833) and Emma (b.1837). John worked as a sergeant.

In the 1851 census, the family are shown to be living at 33 Canal Walk, St Marys, Southampton. The whole family were shown to be born in Southampton. John Snr. was Inspector of Weights and Measures. John jnr was not listed. William was an unemployed brewer, Ernest was a whitesmith and Richard was an apprentice. In the 1861 census, the family were living in a villa in South Stoneham. John was still Town Sergeant - Inspector of Weights and Measures. Richard still lived with them as did 2 additional children, Mary (b.1846) and Alice (b.1851), who were both scholars. They had one domestic servant.
