In 1901, Maurice Lyle (b.1894, London) was a visitor staying at Elm Tree Cottage, Highfield Lane, Portswood. It was the home of John B. Rolph (b.1854, Southampton) and his wife Charlotte (b.1855, Ropley, Hampshire). John worked as a draughtsman for the Ordnance Survey. They had 3 children of their own staying with them and one grandson.

In the 1911 census he was working as a Grocer's Porter, born London circa 1894, resident with Cornelius Fudge, of 44, High Crown Street, Highfield, Southampton. Cornelius was a policeman. His son, Walter, was also killed in WW1 and is remembered here.

Airman 2nd Class 1253, 6th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Died 10th December 1914. At the time of his death, his squadron were attacking German artillery to support the troops on the frontlines in France.
