In the 1841 census, Thomas MacCalmont, aged 32, was a Church of England clergyman staying in Church Street, Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales. He was staying in a property with Lingford's (Robert M., b.1815 - Elizabeth, b.1811 - Ellen, b.1815) who were all of independent means, Barrett's (R., b.1816, a printer - Rachel, b.1821), Crompton's (Eliza, b.1806 - Thomas, b.1801) both of independent means and George Coats (b.1821) a merchant. There is no indication of the relationship of the group, although none were born in the county.

At this time Emily Hill was living with her parents Frederick (b.1791) and Sarah (b.1791) in the home of Sarah Haynes (b.1766) in Polygon, Southampton. Also present was Katherine Austen (b.1796). All were of independent means. There were 5 domestic servants (4 female, 1 male).

In the 1851 census, Thomas McCalmont (b.1809, Antrim, Ireland) was a clergyman for the Church of England, without Cure of Souls, living in Highfield with his wife, Emily G. (b.1827, Gatcombe, Isle of Wight) and children; Frederick (b.1847, South Stoneham) and a 2 month old, unbaptised son.
Three domestic staff were listed; a nurse (Elizabeth Lee, b.1818, Isle of Wight), housemaid (Ann Swift, b.1819, Southampton) and footman (Henry Lucas, b.1826, Dorset).

In the 1861 census, the MacCalmonts home was named as Rosary, Highfield, South Stoneham. Thomas was still a clergyman but had not taken orders. Emily G was present as were 5 children; Frederick, Alfred L (b.1851), Louisa E (b.1852), Evangeline E (b.1855) and Barclay C. (B.1860). All the children were born in South Stoneham and all except Barclay were scholars. Frederick was at Eton.
6 domestic staff were named, including their coachman and nurse (George and Elizabeth Pope), nursemaid (Louisa Pope, b.1844, Derbyshire), footman (Christopher Grace, b.1835, Surrey), cook (Elizabeth Jarman, B.1821, Hampshire) and housemaid (Henrietta Bailey, b. 1834, South Stoneham).

In the 1871 census, the family were still living in Highfield (property not named but by this time had been enlarged and was known as Highfield Hall*). Thomas was described as a clergyman in the Church of England and landowner. Also present was his wife Emily G. and children; Florence P (b.1852), Evangeline E. and Barclay Cains. 8 domestic staff were listed; the coachman and nurse (George and Elizabeth Pope), footman (Richard Harris, b.1843, Southampton), groom (Henry Hayter, b.1859, Southampton) and domestics (Harriett Searle, b. 1838, Hants - Mary Hazell, b.1846, Somerset - Eliza Blanchard, b.1846, Southampton - Ann Lawrence, b.1852, Southampton).
