In the 1891 census, the Richards family lived in Point Out Road, North Stoneham (now Bassett, Southampton). Walter (b.1860, Shirley, Southampton) was a carman (delivery driver). His wife was Ellen (b.1863, Shirley). They had 3 children; George (b.1886, Bassett), John (b.1888, Bassett) and Frederick (b.1890, Bassett).

In 1901, Albert (b.1896, Bassett) and Frederick Richards (b.1891, Bassett) lived with their family on Alma Road, North Stoneham (renamed as Burgess Road, Bassett, Southampton in 1924 - and was the section between Hill Lane and The Avenue). The house was located between Clifton Cottages (now number 85-87) and The Basset Hotel which was located at the corner of Butterfield Road.
Their father Walter was still a carman and their mother, Ellen (b.1862, Bassett) did not work. Also living with them was elder brother, John (b.1888, Bassett) and sister, Mable (b.1893, Bassett).

Commonwealth War Graves Commission Records show that F. Richards (service number 66629), a Gunner in the 24th Bty. 38th Bde. Royal Field Artillery died of wounds on the 18th July 1916. His grave is located in the Bedford House Cemetery, reference Enclosure No.4 I. H. 8. He received the British and Victory Medals.

Albert Richards (service number 331015) was a Rifleman with the 1/8th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment. He died on 19th April 1917 in Palestine, during the second battle for Gaza and is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, reference XXI. C. 16.
That day, from the 800 in his regiment that went out, only 92 men returned from the battle.
