In the 1851 census, James Shaw (b.1819, Ulverston) was a stone mason living in Worsbrough, Yorkshire. The address was given as Mr Newmans Houses.
He lived with his wife Ann (b.1826, Worsbrough) and two children; Charles (b.1849, Worsbrough) and Truelove (b.1850, Worsbrough).

In the 1861 census, James Shaw was still a stone mason, but was now living with his parents; James (b.1791, Wigan, Lancashire) and Margaret (b.1794, Ulswick, Lancashire), at 11, Bluchen Street in Barnsley, Yorkshire. His father was a stonemasons labourer. James wife Ann was not present, although James was described as married.
Also living at the property was James unmarried sister, Elizabeth (b.1831, Barnsley) and 4 grandchildren of James Snr, all born in Barnsley; James (b.1853), John (b.1856), Charles (b.1858), and Elizabeth (b.1860).
