In the 1841 census, James Stainer (b.1791) and his wife Sarah (b.1791) were living on Hyde Street, Hyde (St. Bartholemews parish). James was a dairyman. Also living with them was Caroline Stainer (b.1821, Hampshire)

In 1851, James Stainer (b.1787, Kingston, Hampshire), was living at Matt House, Highfield, with his wife Sarah (b.1787, Brimmer, Wiltshire). James was a retired dairyman. They had two lodgers; James Weaver (b.1807, Kingston, Surrey) and Henry Carter (b.1830, Twyford, Hampshire). Both were matt men.
