Sergeant Pilot, RAF VR, 104 Squadron
Lesley’s family lived at 45 Blenheim Gardens, he had sung in the church choir for 7 years, and was the Secretary to the Guild, and first member to ‘make the supreme sacrifice’.
His obituary in the parish newsletter stated, “but above all he was loved because he was essentially so good and straight and true”. His funeral service was held at Highfield Church and he is buried at South Stoneham Cemetery.
Mary Tubb
died 1st December 1940, aged 68
Civilian -Somerset Road
Mary was in the Anderson shelter at the home of her daughter Ivy & her family, in Somerset Road, Portswood, when the shelter took a direct hit. Mary was killed along with Ivy, Ivy's husband Edward Jellett, who was home on leave from the Royal Navy and Edward their 7 year old son. Only Mary's grandson, a small baby, survived.
An officer and 12 sailors from Edward’s ship assisted at the funeral in Highfield Church.
Arthur Edward Godstone Twelvetrees
died 4th September 1942, aged 24
Lieutenant, 70th Hampshire
Arthur lived at 2 Russell Place and attended King Edward VI School.
He had been a passenger on a training flight when it crashed at Hurn, killing all 7 men on board.
Arthur is buried at Thorney Hill (All Saints) Churchyard, Sopley, Hampshire.
Bertram Morley Waller
died 11th August 1944, aged 29
Captain, Royal Corps of Signals
Bertram’s family lived in Highfield Lane. He died during the Invasion of Normandy and is remembered at the Bretteville-sur-laize Canadian War Cemetery in France.
Kenneth Ware
died 21st May 1941, aged 19
Ordinary Seaman, HMS Juno
The destroyer Juno was attacked off the coast of Crete. She was the first ship lost to the air attacks of the Stukkas, and aircraft from the Italian air force.
Kenneth is listed on Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
William Shutler Waterman
died 26th October 1942, aged 71
Civilian
William was the father of the Verger of Highfield Church. The Obituary in the Parish Newsletter records that he had moved his family to the New Forest when he retired. The family had just sat down to eat their meal when the bomb hit and injured them, they all died later the same day at Fenwick Cottage Hospital. They were brought back to Highfield Church for their funerals.
Ethel Isabel Waterman
died 26th October 1942, aged 69
Civilian
Ethel was the mother of the Verger of Highfield Church. The Obituary in the Parish Newsletter records that her family had just sat down to eat their meal when the bomb hit and injured them. They all died later the same day at Fenwick Cottage Hospital. They had moved to the New Forest when her husband retired but they were brought back to Highfield Church for their funerals.
Phyllis Eva Mary Waterman
died 26th October 1942, aged 28
Civilian
Phyllis was the sister of the Verger of Highfield Church. The Obituary in the Parish Newsletter records that she had moved to the New Forest with her parents when her father retired. They were brought back to Highfield Church for their funerals.
John Hunter Waterston
died 26th June 1943, aged 20
Sgt (Navigator), RAF, 77 Squadron
John was named after his father who had served in RN VR.
His crew had left from RAF Bomber Command Station Elvington, near York, on an overnight mission to Dusseldorf. They were shot down by a night fighter between Jülich and Elsdorf.
All 7 crew died and were buried at Köln-Zollstock.
After the war they were moved to Reinberg War Cemetery.
Walter Charles Frederick Webb
died 22nd June 1942, aged 36
Civilian 8, Richmond Gardens
Walter died with his wife, Dora and young daughter, Janet. They were killed when 71 bombs were dropped over Portswood, Highfield & Bitterne, in just over 1 hour shortly after midnight.
He is one of 11 people, remembered by Highfield Church, killed as a result of enemy action on just this one night.
Dora Gertrude Webb
died 22nd June 1942, aged 29
Civilian 8, Richmond Gardens

Janet Webb

Edward Leighton Wirgman
died 1945, aged 42

Edward was the House Governor and Secretary for the Royal South Hants Hospital. In 1939 he became Group Officer for Southampton on the BMA Emergency War Committees.He left 3 children; Geraldine, Peter and Beryl. His widow, Nancy, lived at 73 Welbeck Avenue.
Constance Doterel Mary Wort
died 1st May 1945, aged 33
Sister, Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service
Constance was born at Orchard House, Hawthorn Road and attended Highfield School. As a child she always wanted to be a nurse. In the London Gazette of 12th December 1941 she is listed as being made a sister, Women’s Forces, Emergency Commissions. According to the November 1974 Parish Magazine, ‘she was still well remembered by all those that had been at school with her’. Constance is buried at Digboi ar Cemetery, India.
